Jon qualified as a solicitor in 1990 and joined Mills & Co in 1996, becoming a partner in 1997 and, from April 2017, a director of Mills & Co. Solicitors Limited.
Jon’s contentious work, in High Court and London Arbitration proceedings and in mediation, includes charterparty disputes, cargo claims, sale of goods disputes and ship repair disputes. His non-contentious work includes drafting standard terms of carriage, and drafting standard terms for the sale of goods.
Jon speaks German.
Jon has an MA from Cambridge University (where he studied law at Queens' College) and an LLM from Southampton University (where he studied admiralty law, the law relating carriage of goods by sea, and sale of goods law). He trained and qualified as a solicitor at London shipping and commodities practice Middleton Potts.

He also advises on contracts for the sale and purchase of commodities (including metals, coal and soft commodities) and spent a year on secondment to the legal team of a multinational mining and petroleum company.

A large part of Peter's practice is investigating casualties, collecting evidence and managing cases relating to collisions, groundings, salvage, total losses, damage to hull generally and safe port issues.
Peter has a BSc(Hons) in Marine Commerce and an LL.M in Marine Law and Policy from Cardiff University. Prior to practising law he was a deck officer in the merchant navy between 1972 and 1982 and holds a master mariner's certificate of competency. Peter is also a notary public and a CEDR accredited mediator.
